One of the most popular customizations for vehicles in Massachusetts is window tinting. Although many owners attempt this type of customization on their own, it’s not something we recommend. Each state has set regulations for acceptable tinting. In this article, we’re focusing on our hometown of Massachusetts and the guidelines to follow.
Darkness
The main benefit of window tinting is the darkness it provides. From privacy to protecting your interior, there are multiple reasons car owners choose to tint their windows. However, how dark you decide to go is regulated by state law. The percent of visible light that comes through your windows is referred to as VLT (visible light transmission). Below is the Massachusetts VLT guidelines for both sedans, SUVs, and vans:
- Windshields: Non-reflective only, top 6 inches of the windshield
- Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in
- Back Side Windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in
- Rear Window: Must allow more than 35% of light in
Reflection
Another property that window tinting provides is the reflection of incoming light. Reducing glare and heat in the car, tint reflection is also regulated by state guidelines. Similar to darkness levels, both sedans, SUVs, and vans also have a common restriction to follow:
- Front Side Windows: No more than 35% reflective
- Back Side Windows: No more than 35% reflective
Other guidelines
Although darkness and reflection are the two most prominently monitored features, some states take other elements into consideration as well. Below is just a few:
- Side mirrors. Often, if the back window is tinted, the vehicle must have dual side mirrors.
- Color restrictions. Although Massachusetts currently has no limits on tint color, other states do limit which colors are acceptable.
- Massachusetts state law recommends but does not require labels to identify legal tinting. However, this is not the case is several states. It’s always best to keep paperwork handy when traveling.
- Medical exemptions. Consulting your state’s law is the best way to review if medical exceptions are permitted.
