How Does PPF Work?

In New England, our cars can take a real beating in the wintertime. There’s the ice and snow, not to mention the salt and sand that we put on the roads to deal with the ice and snow. We have window tinting to protect the interiors of our cars and make our rides more comfortable, but what about the rest of your car? There must be a way to protect your car’s paint job, right? As it turns out, there absolutely is. It’s a paint protective film, or PPF for short.

But what is PPF, and how does it work?

What is PPF?

A paint protective film is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It is a film that goes on the outside of your car to protect the paint. It is similar to window tinting in that it is a stretchy transparent layer that covers a surface. However, PPF is clear, unlike window tint, which is, well, tinted. PPF simply creates a barrier between your car’s paint and whatever the road throws at it. (Though there are wraps that change the color of your car.)

What does PPF do?

PPF deflects things like gravel and sand that would nick, scrape, or scratch your car. Some types of PPF are what we call “self-healing,” which means that the film absorbs the damage. All you have to do is apply heat, either with a heat gun or hot water, and the scratches in the film disappear! And yes, it is as cool as it sounds.

How long does PFF last?

The lifespan of PPF depends on a couple of factors, but it is typically 5 to 7 years. You will be able to tell that the PPF is nearing the end of its life when the edges start to peel up or scratches stop healing themselves.
