Laser Jammers vs. Radar Detectors: What’s the Difference?

POSTED ON January 25, 2025

Do you have something of a lead foot, especially on the highway? If you’ve gotten multiple speeding tickets, you could use a little help to let you know when there’s a speed trap ahead. Two devices can alert you to a police offer looking for speeders: a laser jammer and a radar detector. Laser jammers and radar detectors are both devices that can help drivers avoid getting speeding tickets. However, there are some key differences between the two technologies.

What’s the difference between laser jammers and radar detectors? Let’s look at how they work so you can determine which is the better option for you.

How Laser Jammers Work

Laser jammers emit a beam of light identical to the laser beam used by police laser guns. When the police laser gun beam hits the laser jammer, it is reflected back to the gun, which causes the gun to give a false reading. Rather than alerting you to the presence of the police officer, it makes you “invisible” to the speed detector.

How Radar Detectors Work

Radar detectors detect the radio waves emitted by police radar guns. When they detect a radar gun, they alert the driver with a sound or visual signal. Radar detectors give you a warning so you have time to slow down before the police officer’s equipment can register your speed.

Which is Better?

In general, laser jammers are more effective than radar detectors. A laser jammer can prevent a police officer from getting a reading on your speed. Radar detectors can only warn you that a radar gun is targeting you. However, laser jammers are more difficult to install than radar detectors, and they are also illegal in some states. California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia all have laws against using laser jammers. Radar detectors, on the other hand, are only illegal in Virginia, Washington D.C., and on military installations.

Which One Should You Choose?

The best option for you depends on your individual needs and budget. A laser jammer is the best way to avoid speeding tickets effectively. However, if you are on a budget or live in a state where laser jammers are illegal, a radar detector is a good option.
